My husband and I have just gone through the worst four months of our lives. We hired a woman by the name of Shawnee Ryan – owner of Duir Construction and Design out of Glenwood Springs Colorado to do some remodeling of our home. At first she was very nice and we were happy with the plans she gave us. But satan manipulates you with a smile and hides her horns and pitch fork.
Shawnee promised us a time schedule and we agreed on a prices, materials etc. We picked out tile from her shop as well as light and plumbing fixtures. After we had agreed on everything and signed her (bogus) contract and gave her a large deposit, the nightmare began. The first day of scheduled work her workman did not show up. After several calls she finally called back THREE days later and said she would reschedule and tried to make it out to be OUR fault! We were angry over this but wanted the work done and agreed to the new schedule.
A week later the tile work began and upon coming home after the installation and discovering it was the WRONG tile we stopped the work and again made several calls to Shawnee. Her lack of attention to our complaints, her manipulations and lies continued over the next several weeks as we tried to get what was promised to us.
We cancelled the remaining work and we are still trying to get our money back. We discovered after much research that Shawnee has done this to several clients – a full on ‘bait and switch’ SCAM! She has you pick out items like light fixtures, tile, plumbing fixtures and asks for a large deposit. THEN she switches out the items for lower price items. She deposits your check and refuses to return your money.
In our research we discovered the following – She has 7 Court Judgments against her in Pitkin County and 10 Judgments against her in Garfield County. (She claims to work all over the state so we’re sure she has more judgments in other counties) We’ve discovered other victims that were harmed by this “expletive”. She has been completely unprofessional, brutally disrespectful and completely dishonest with us and others we have spoken to. She has not paid several of her subcontractors and has an UNSATISFACTORY STANDING with the BBB. This woman needs to be run out of town!
We spoke to another couple that had a worse experience than we did. We were contacted by them after we got our own contractor to finish our job. This couple also had to go through this contractor after being completely snowed by Shawnee Ryan and Duir Designs. Shawnee installed totally inferior wood flooring into this couple’s home last year. They ordered a very high end wood flooring for their entire house. What was installed ‘looked’ like what they had picked out until they started having trouble with it. They discovered that instead of the expensive – totally paid for, solid wood floors that they ordered the flooring that Shawnee actually put in was a much lower grade product which cost thousands less than what they had ordered. Shawnee pocketed the difference.
This couple pressed charges of course but this "expletive" knows how to ‘work the system’. BE AWARE – she knows how to manipulate and it will COST YOU! We just discovered this website and we are spreading the word about Duir Designs and owner Shawnee Ryan. Please – if this spawn of satan, sociopath, pathological liar has burned you – please tell as many people you can and add your experience to this blog! She does NOT belong in our wonderful community.

She is a horrible human being. I have a client who paid for custom light fixtures from her and never received anything. She continually said they would be coming and became irate when questioned about their status. I finally contacted the artist who was to produce the fixtures and they informed that there was never any order placed. Finally I went to the Garfield County DA's office to report the fraud and was told there are 35 other complaints against her. I got a less than confident feeling from the authorities that they would take any action against her even though there is a mountain of evidence against her. She is smearing the city of Glenwood Springs by remaining open for business and all the while the Beeson/Cheney team does NOTHING!
No worries Bruce. The Beeson/Cheney team are doing something about this horrible criminal.
The District Attorney has interviewed 35 victims and out of those victims six are clear cut felony cases against Shawnee Ryan.
Too bad they cannot include the felony she received in the eary
90's for embezzlement. She was a single mom, had small children at the time so they did not give her jail time. She did not learn a lesson that time, she only got smarter. Now with all the victims finding out about each other and connecting we had a strong case against this criminal to take to the DA in GLenwood Springs Colorado. They have no doubt that she will be serving time in jail for her many crimes against hard working people.
It is about time she is accountable for her actions.
As of today Ms. Ryan thinks she is off the hook.

New information right off the press,
New word is that the reason this woman Shawnee Ryan was arrested on nine felonies last year is because the District Attorney Martin Beeson, Glenwood Springs City Council, all of District 9, the Sheriff’s Department, the City Police, the Chief of Police, the Board of Directors, the Mayor , the City Manager, the Glenwood Chamber and all their employees are afraid of the 60 year old Catholic Italian chamber CEO.
We were curious to look into this. This many people from an entire city coming down on a local business owner. Why?
Word is that all these individuals are so afraid of the CEO that ALL OF THEM are ready to risk their careers to take Ms. R. down.
In our investigation, all we could find is that Ms. R. has been in 30+ lawsuits from her customers mostly and a few vendors over the past several years and Mrs. Virgili was one of the lawsuits. We also found that right after Ms. R was fired from her working relationship with the chamber ceo in 09 her and her husband began a lawsuit against Ms. R.
Mr. R filed a complaint against Mrs. Virgili saying she was a dishonest person within the month she was fired.
We found that it was many of the victims finding out about each other they got together went to the DA because of the scams done to them allegedly by Ms. R. and this is how the investigation began. We could find nothing credible about her allegations about the entire city coming down on her on the contrary we found it to be the other way around.
Over 65 victims of Ms. R’s came in to be interviewed by the DA’s investigator and to tell their story.
Ms. R has stated that three of her victims went to the DA, made up the stories and the DA believed them. We did not find this to be true. In fact we found that none of the victims knew each other before.
We have noticed that in quite a few blogs and comment sights that Ms. R in charge of states that there is an investigation of Ms. Virgili. We could find no investigation; in fact, there has never been an investigation.
Ms. Ryan has stated that her life and the life of her young children have been threatened and that they are in hiding. What we found is that Ms. R’s children are grown and that she is estranged from her “grown kids”. They do not see her or talk to her. We were curious why Ms. R would say these things.
We looked into her son’s suicide in Sept of 2010. Ms. Ryan stated on this blog that three of her victims were responsible for her son’s death.
This is what we found.
Ms. R’s son was working with the District Attorney. Ms. R allegedly embezzled money from her son’s bank account and he was working with the investigator to gather the evidence to have his Mother Ms. Ryan arrested on two more felonies, embezzlement and check fraud, let me remind you “her son”. He then comitted suicide.
We believe this story has a very dark side to it and we are not getting the truth from Ms. Ryan.

What are people going to say when they find out what you have done to your own children....it will come out you know. Hypocrite!
I am so pleased to know that justice will be done for Ms. R, We are one of the Vendors she screwed, all the while trying to climb our corp. ladder to have employees fired because we would not bow to her demands. Writing nasty emails, acting as though she was such a good account and that we should give her what she wanted or else. Bye Bye B....h

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — Shawnee Ryan, a local interior designer accused of defrauding about 40 clients, on Thursday was declared competent to stand trial.
In addition, Ninth Judicial District Judge Denise Lynch made it clear that she would not stand for any more delays in the case, which already has dragged on for nearly two years.
Some of Ryan's alleged victims were in the courtroom Thursday to watch the proceedings, and seemed disappointed that nothing more happened.
“See you next week,” muttered one man with a rueful grin as he stepped toward the courtroom door.
Ryan was ordered by Ninth Judicial District Judge Denise Lynch to appear in court again at 9 a.m. on Monday.
Ryan, 54, was arrested in May 2010 after a year-long investigation by authorities, and charged with defrauding numerous clients for thousands of dollars worth of undelivered goods.
Ryan was rearrested in September 2010 on charges of check fraud and violating conditions of her bond in the previous charge.
At the court hearing on Thursday, public defender Jim Conway told the judge that two separate competency evaluations found Ryan to be competent to stand trial.
“Miss Ryan may have some mental health issues,” acknowledged Judge Lynch, “but they do not rise to the level of legal incompetency.” She accepted the findings.
Conway then turned to his office's difficulties with Ryan, which have included letters sent to the judge seeking the court's help in firing the public defender's office and finding her another attorney.
The judge rebuffed those efforts in a ruling, and directed Ryan to only file papers in the case through her attorneys and to refrain from attempts to contact the judge directly.
“There's a situation that exists where it's going to be very difficult for our office to represent her,” Conway told the judge, promising to inform the court by Monday if his office is forced to withdraw from the case.
Prosecutor Andrea Bryan objected to further continuances, noting that the case already is nearly two years old.
Bryan pointed out that Ryan's failed attempt to have a special prosecutor assigned to the case last year ate up four months of the court's time, and that conducting two different competency evaluations took another five months.
“This case has gone on forever,” agreed the judge.
“I'm beginning to feel this is a deliberate attempt by the defendant to delay this case to the point where we're not going to have any more victims left,” Bryan mused.
“That's not going to happen,” responded Judge Lynch.
The judge told the attorneys and Ryan that they must reach a plea bargain to conclude the case, or it must be set for trial as quickly as possible.
According to court records, approximately 40 people have been victimized by Ryan's allegedly deceptive business practices.
Authorities say she ran design businesses in Glenwood Springs and Basalt under several different names, starting as early as 2007, including Duir Design, Glenwood Design Center and Interiors By You.
Ryan is accused of providing customers with cheaper products than had been promised, and some clients reported they never received products at all, according to court documents.
In some cases, investigators claimed, orders were never placed and Ryan simply pocketed the cash.

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — A frustrated judge and an attorney new to the case collided on Thursday in the prosecution of alleged thief Shawnee Ryan.
“I cannot delay this further,” said Ninth District Judge Denise Lynch of the felony theft case against Ryan.
“These victims need justice, as well as Ms. Ryan,” the judge said, noting that the case has gone on for nearly two years.
Ryan, 54, was arrested in May 2010, after a year-long investigation by area authorities, and charged with six counts of theft. She is accused of defrauding approximately 40 clients of her design businesses.
Ryan was arrested again in September 2010 on charges of check fraud and violating the conditions of her bond in the theft case.
Ryan was in court on Thursday for the first time with her new attorney, Kathy Goudy of Carbondale, who was appointed after public defender Jim Conway withdrew from the case, citing conflicts with Ryan.
Judge Lynch said at Thursday's hearing that she wanted to set a trial date immediately.
“There's been one delay after another,” Lynch told Goudy. “We're going to have to set this for trial.”
Among the apparent reasons for delay in the case is that Ryan had been trying to fire Conway's office for some time, as shown by a letter she sent to Judge Lynch in late 2010.
Goudy objected to setting a trial date now. She argued that with multiple charges to be analyzed and 10,000 pages of documents to be reviewed, setting a trial date now would interfere with her ability to prepare a defense.
“I work at night,” the judge remarked at this point. “You can work at night, too.”
“I do work at night,” Goudy replied.
Goudy offered to withdraw as Ryan's attorney, but the judge replied, “I'm not going to allow you to withdraw. I'm not going to delay this. I've made it very clear.”
Goudy then argued that, by setting a trial date, the judge effectively would be preventing any plea negotiations with the district attorney's office.
But prosecutor Andrea Bryan said she would leave the door open to plea negotiations even after a trial date had been set.
Goudy then noted that Ryan has not yet filed a plea in the case. Goudy asked the judge to state the grounds on which the court would essentially be filing a plea of not guilty on Ryan's behalf by setting a trial date.
The judge responded that her grounds are that the trial has been delayed unnecessarily. She continued the case until Feb. 14, when a trial date will be set.
